Burls, Knots, and Roots

In a particular area of the woods, while hiking, I enjoy the beauty of our protected trees with spectacularly formed burls. Burls are a growth in the tree formed by stress due to injury, insect infestation, mold, virus, or a fungus.  The grain of the tree gets twisted and interlocked which creates an extremely dense wood. This density makes the wood strong and resistant to splitting making it useful for mallets, artistic bowls, musical instruments, car dashboards, and veneers and inlay for furniture.
